Fire Hydrant Inspections

Sandy Springs has two types of fire hydrants that provide water supplies during fire emergencies.

Public hydrants are the most common and are located within the public right-of-way adjacent to streets and roads. These hydrants are painted silver and are owned by the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management. Sandy Springs coordinates with the City of Atlanta for hydrant maintenance.

The second type is a private hydrant. These hydrants are typically located within business parks, schools, apartment complexes, and similar properties.

Private hydrants are owned by the property owner, who is responsible for annual inspection and maintenance by a City-approved contractor. Private hydrants are also painted silver but are identified by a reflective orange band on the hydrant bonnet.

To report a damaged or leaking fire hydrant, contact the City’s 24/7 Call Center at 770-730-5600.

Property owners are responsible for the testing and maintenance of all hydrants not located within the public right-of-way. Testing and maintenance must be completed by qualified contractors, and inspection reports are subject to review by the Fire Department.

Testing

The City conducts annual inspections and flushing of all public fire hydrants to help ensure proper operation and water quality.

Hydrant flushing helps prevent the buildup of minerals and sediment within water lines, which can contribute to corrosion and discoloration.

During flushing operations, water near the hydrant site and in nearby homes may temporarily appear rust-colored as mineral and iron deposits are disturbed.

The water remains safe to use and consume during flushing operations; however, it may stain laundry.

To clear household water lines, residents should run cold water until the water appears clear.

Residents should monitor the City website and social media channels for hydrant testing and flushing notices.

Private hydrants must be tested by a Georgia-licensed fire hydrant company. Testing reports must be uploaded to Compliance Engine within 30 days of test completion.
