ADAPTIVE KAYAKING MAKES A BIG SPLASH IN SANDY SPRINGS

New Program Designed for People with Disabilities

A steady parade of kayaks, canoes, and other boats take to the Chattahoochee River each summer. This year, Sandy Springs is partnering with Catalyst Sports on an inclusive program to provide even more access to the river. The Adaptive Kayaking program, which is designed for persons with disabilities, launched on May 3 at Morgan Falls Overlook Park.

The kayaks are specially designed to create an opportunity for river enthusiasts with disabilities to safely enjoy kayaking. Design features include outriggers on each side of the kayak to provide extra stability to prevent tipping, and the seats are higher and adjustable to offer additional core support to the passenger. Additional modifications are also available.

Participant Maggie Frederick shared her excitement about the Adaptive Kayaking program. “The boats are very stable with the floats on the side,” she said. “My favorite part is the backrest inside the boat. They have pads that you can adjust to fit you and help sit you up if you have bad balance. I am very excited about the ongoing program and the opportunity to be out on the water. It is very peaceful and great exercise. I am excited for people in Georgia to have access to the water that they otherwise might not have.”

Sandy Springs Recreation and Parks Program Manager Jane Jarrett is a Certified Adaptive Recreation and Sports Specialist (CARSS) and explained the importance of programs like these. “Sandy Springs is an inclusive community, and offering adaptive kayaking provides opportunities for people with disabilities to get on the water and explore,” Jarrett said. “Recreation is vital to the quality of life.”
