Preparing for Your Court Appearance

Court Appearance Guidelines
Please review the following guidelines to help ensure a safe and efficient court experience.
- If you require an interpreter for a language other than English, email municipalcourts@sandyspringsga.gov before the scheduled court date listed on your notice so staff can arrange an interpreter session.
- Defendants under the age of 21 are encouraged to bring one parent or guardian to attend the hearing, although this is not required by law.
- Court appearance times are staggered to help manage courtroom occupancy. Defendants must check in at the security checkpoint at or before their scheduled court time.
- Court security will not allow defendants into the courtroom before their scheduled appearance time.
Security Checkpoint Information
- Please bring your court notice or rescheduling notice with you.
- All containers and bags are subject to search.
- All cell phones must remain on silent during court proceedings.
- Food and drinks are not permitted inside the courtroom.
Failure to Appear in Court
Failure to appear in court or pay an eligible citation before the court date may result in:
- A warrant being issued for your arrest
- Your driver’s license being submitted for suspension through the Georgia Department of Driver Services
Most citations may be paid online through the City of Sandy Springs website or through the automated phone payment system at 770-206-2075.
If you are ill or unable to attend court, contact court@sandyspringsga.gov to discuss available options.

Courtroom Rules
- Defendants dressed inappropriately may have their case rescheduled.
- Food and drinks are not permitted in the courtroom.
- All containers and bags are subject to search.
- Cell phones must remain on silent.
Required Court Appearances
The following offenses require a mandatory court appearance:
- Aggressive driving
- All City nuisance offenses
- All alcohol-related offenses except open container violations
- All code enforcement and environmental compliance violations
- All defendants under the age of 21
- All drug offenses
- Charges that may result in jail time or license suspension
- Attempting to elude a police officer
- Hit and run
- Habitual violator offenses
- No insurance
- Passing a loading or unloading school bus
- Possession of a concealed weapon
- Racing
- Reckless driving
- Shoplifting
- Speeding 30 mph or more over the posted speed limit
- Driving with a suspended license
- Suspended registration
- Vehicular homicide or serious injury charges
Interpreter Services
Spanish interpreters are available during all court sessions.
If you require interpretation services in another language, contact the clerk’s office before your court date at 770-206-2075.
Accident Reports
To request a copy of an accident report, contact the Sandy Springs Police Department .
Attorneys
You are not required to hire an attorney to appear in Municipal Court, but you may choose to have legal representation.
If you cannot afford an attorney, the judge may determine during arraignment whether you qualify for court-appointed representation under federal guidelines.
Additional Court Policies
- Walk-in appearances are only permitted for individuals with a Failure to Appear (FTA) or Bench Warrant (BW).
- Attorney cases will only be addressed if they are scheduled on that day’s court calendar.
