SSFD Volunteer Programs
The Sandy Springs Fire Department (SSFD) offers many volunteer opportunities intended to prepare citizens wanting to help their neighborhood and Sandy Springs community in time of disaster, save a life, learn about firefighter activities from the inside, and join SSFD’s Fire Corps (SSFC). These volunteer opportunities are under the direction of the Community Affairs Section of SSFD.
4 Minute AED Community Program
The 4 Minute Community Program is an innovative, approach designed to transform the way sudden cardiac arrest is addressed in the community. By leveraging historical data on Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in specific areas, the initiative will equip CPR-trained citizen volunteers in the City of Sandy Springs with Avive Connect AEDs, advanced and connected defibrillators.
Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)
Emergencies can strike at any time; CERT training prepares citizens to help their community and neighbors during a disaster or fire event. The (CERT) program educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for the hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT offers a consistent, nationwide approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations, which allows them to focus on more complex tasks. Through CERT, the capabilities to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters is built and enhanced. CERT is also a eight week program that has now been incorporated with The Citizens Fire Academy class.
Citizens Fire Academy (CFA)
The Citizens Fire Academy is an immersive, 8-week program, meant to educate participants in the work of the Sandy Springs Fire Department and what it’s like to be a firefighter. CFA participants receive training in several fire service activities and earn American Heart Association CPR/AED certification. Graduates of CFA may be eligible to join SSFC.
Fire Corps (SSFC)
The Sandy Springs Fire Corps is an advanced volunteer unit of the SSFD. Fire Corps members offer their time and skills to support the fire department in a variety of hands-on roles.
