Fire Safety Inspections
To help maintain a high level of fire and life safety, the Fire Marshal’s Office conducts annual inspections of public and commercial buildings throughout Sandy Springs.
Inspections include stand-alone businesses, tenants within commercial high-rise and mid-rise buildings, and shopping centers. Inspections may be scheduled or conducted as unscheduled spot checks.
The purpose of these inspections is to verify compliance with fire codes, reduce fire hazards, and educate businesses about fire-safe practices.
Common interior inspection items include:
- Maintenance of exits
- Properly maintained automatic fire sprinkler systems
- Working fire alarm systems
- Self-releasing doors
- Fire walls
- Portable fire extinguishers
- Illuminated exit signs
- Emergency lighting systems
- General housekeeping
- Safe use of electrical equipment
Exterior inspection items may include:
- Maintenance of fire lanes
- Clearly visible address numbers
- Knox Box access
- Clearance around fire hydrants
Serious violations that present an immediate threat to fire and life safety, such as blocked exits or overcrowding, must be corrected immediately during the inspection.
Less serious violations will be documented in an inspection report along with a timeline for correction. Re-inspections may be conducted as needed to verify compliance.
Fire inspectors also provide guidance and education to encourage safe practices and ongoing compliance with fire safety requirements.
To request an inspection or verify that your property is in compliance, contact the Fire Marshal’s Office Inspection Line at 770-206-4362 or email fireinspections@sandyspringsga.gov .
Certain businesses may require a special fire inspection before obtaining a City business license or liquor license. Information about these inspection requirements is available through the City’s business licensing department .
