Celebrate Black History Month at The Gallery at City Springs Featuring Artist DAKORO Edwards

January 25, 2024

To celebrate the beginning of Black History Month, Art Sandy Springs and The Empowerment Workshop are in partnership for a special exhibit featuring the artwork of DAKORO Edwards, an abstract expressionism painter. The exhibit, titled "CONNECT: Youth, Community, Diversity," pays homage to Sandy Springs businesses, organizations, and schools that have significantly impacted the community.

The artist reception is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 1, from 6-8 p.m. in the lobby of Sandy Springs City Hall, 1 Galambos Way, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. During the reception, DAKORO Edwards will host a LIVE art performance. The event is free and open to the public.

“This exhibit is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together and celebrate the rich history and diversity of Sandy Springs,” said Mayor Rusty Paul.  “We invite everyone to join us for an evening of art, music, and community connection.”

About the featured artist: DAKORO Edwards is a native of Syracuse, New York, who discovered his passion for drawing at the young age of four, thanks to his parents. As he grew older, DAKORO honed his artistic skills with guidance from his middle and high school art instructors, allowing him to explore non-traditional art techniques and become a multi-layered artist.

DAKORO's artistic process is infused with an energy that can be seen and felt in his creations. He owned a gallery at City Walk because he was captivated by the diversity and vibrant energy of Sandy Springs, which led him to establish his business there.

DAKORO's connection to the community goes beyond owning a gallery. Although the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically impacted his business, he has shown incredible resilience and commitment to fostering connections within the community. He often remarks that "the sun just shines differently here."
