The City of Sandy Springs Adds Fishing to its Adaptive Recreation Programs

July 2, 2025

Bordering 22 miles of Sandy Springs, the Chattahoochee River is one of the City’s most popular neighbors. Now, thanks to a new offering by the City’s Recreation and Parks Department, anglers of all levels can discover the joys of fishing in the river and its tributaries.  Adaptive Fishing will be offered on Friday, July 25 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Springway*. Seasoned anglers and first-timers are welcome.

In partnership with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Empower Therapy, the program can support 16 adaptive anglers and their families and will offer personalized assistance based on individual needs. For some participants, simply having a smaller, sensory-friendly event on even terrain can make all the difference. Others may benefit from adaptive equipment including:

  • EcoRover all-terrain mobility chairs (6 available; waiver required)
  • Adaptive wrist, grip, and arm supports
  • Hearing, vision, and tactile impairment aids
  • On-the-spot training and hands-on support

In addition, to Adaptive Fishing, outdoor enthusiasts can explore the Chattahoochee River with the City’s Adaptive Kayaking program. Led by American Canoe Association-trained instructors, Adaptive Kayaking offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the river with maximum independence. Customized kayaks with specialized equipment along with the accessible dock features a ramp, transfer seat, and kayak launch for smooth river entry. Volunteers for this program are always welcome.

* Please note: Adaptive Fishing participants will meet in the Morgan Falls Dam lower parking lot (crushed gravel surface) and make their way to the Springway, which features a boardwalk and paved walkway. Program providers received special permission to fish for this adaptive event. Fishing is not typically permitted on the Springway.
