Fire Station No. 2 Temporarily Relocates

August 13, 2020

The City of Sandy Springs Fire Department is relocating its crews as the City prepares to begin demolition activities to replace the building.

A temporary station is stationed at Roswell Road and Mt Vernon and will house one crew and one engine.  The station’s ladder company and battalion chief will operate from Fire Station No. 3, located on Raiders Drive.   The temporary locations will enable the Fire Department to maintain coverage within the busy district.

The City Council approved replacing Fire Station No 2 as part of the Fiscal Year 2020 budget.  The station first opened in 1969, and has served fire departments for the City of Atlanta and Fulton County prior to its service for the City of Sandy Springs.  Due to health safety concerns related to COVID-19, a proposed deconstruction ceremony was canceled.

Demolition activities of the facility located at Johnson Ferry Road and Sandy Springs Circle will begin mid-August.  The project’s architect, Hussey Gay Bell & DeYoung, unveiled designs for the new station in December 2019, creating a two-story structure focused on health and safety for the firefighters who live and work from the facility.  The new facility will include a decontamination area with separate HVAC and airlock system, a training area, as well as separate living areas for male and female firefighters.

The structures providing temporary housing will eventually relocate to the northern end of the city to serve as a temporary fire station as the Georgia Department of Transportation rebuilds the Pitts Road Bridge, resulting in a full road closure on Pitts Road.
